Book Review…

17 Mar

I finally finished The Non-Runner’s Marathon Guide for Women written by Dawn Dais.

Out of the 150 or so pages of this book, Dawn recants why she hates running so much for about 140 pages, and only 10 pages are filled with encouraging words that “you can do this too”. This crazy woman decided one day to get off her recliner and spend four months training for a marathon. I don’t even think she attempted a 5K before. The thought of climbing the stairs in her house was an intense workout for her. But whatever, she started training…

The book is mostly a “guide”, but it is also sprinkled with some of her journal entries, in which she details chafing nightmares, how much she hates the way she looks in spandex, and the blisters which have grown on her feet. The last journal entry is all about her marathon experience in Hawaii, in which she walked most of. I’m of the thinking her poor attitude throughout the entire training process had a little bit to do with the fact she started walking the rest of her marathon at mile 11.

Her friend Jen, who she refers to as “Chipper Jen”, is more like us runner bloggers. She actually enjoys running and encourages Dawn. Dawn dislikes Jen’s perky attitude.

I don’t think I learned anything new from this book that I haven’t learned from blogs I read every day. She does give helpful advice to newbies, like the fact you shouldn’t take ibuprofen before or during a run.

It took me a long time to read this book because she made me so mad. Why run when you hate it so much? Go swimming or something instead.

This book was reviewed on Amazon as humorous, but I think I maybe giggled once. I just couldn’t relate to her.

If you’re looking for a real training guide, this isn’t it. And if you’re looking for a funny read, this isn’t it either.

Confessions and Randoms

I haven’t posted about my eating or my weight loss in a while and for good reason. I suppose I’ve gained the typical taper pounds… 3 of them to be exact. The extra calories I have consumed before, after, and in the last week were probably a little more than necessary. I used the half-marathon as an excuse to eat a lot. But the good thing is… I know how to take it off.

By the way, here’s a link to the NYC Half course if you’d like to check it out. I’m very excited most of the run is through Central Park.

Today was massage day! As part of my 101 in 1001 list, I promised myself I’d get a massage after every long race. So I left work an hour early and headed over to Just Knead It to see Janet for an hour-long Swedish massage.

My back was a little more jacked up than I thought it was. She spent a good amount of time working out all of the knots.. I had a ton! But I feel amazing now! Thank you, Janet! :)

Other Randoms:

  • I’ve been emailing back and forth with a property manager in Orlando. I hope to look at some apartments next week when I’m back in Florida again.
  • My landlord has informed me she’s putting my house on the market. I’m not too concerned though because 1) I’m moving anyway and 2) the house next door is identical to mine and it’s been on the market for over a year. But I am concerned that if it does sell quick and before I move to Florida, I may be “homeless” for a bit because no one would want to rent to me for just a few months.
  • I hope to sign up for the Broad Street Run in Philadelphia on May 2 when I get back from New York. It’s a 10-mile run, and I’ve heard it’s “easy and fast”. I just read the number of runners will be capped at 30,000. Thirty thousand?!?! Holy crap! I thought 13,500 at Disney was a lot!
  • Also after the NYC Half, I want to concentrate on getting back into concentrating on healthy eating, as well as start Project Glow and Whittle My Middle.
  • I’ve received some products to review on the blog. I promise I’ll get to them soon!
  • If you look up at the top of the page, I’ve added two new pages- Race Recaps and Wish List.

Oh, and I think I found my headgear for the NYC Half…

Night night lovies!

Randoms About Me!

2 Mar

If you run, you are a runner. It doesn’t matter how fast or how far. It doesn’t matter if today is your first day or if you’ve been running for twenty years. There is no test to pass, no license to earn, no membership card to get. You just run.” –John Bingham
Just thought that was an appropriate quote seeing as how I’m 5 days from my first half-marathon.

Today’s been such a weird, tough day that I almost didn’t want to blog tonight, but writing helps relieve stress, right? We finally had to let someone go at work, and she didn’t exactly take it well. So there was drama this morning. But the good thing is… I got to take her laptop :)

So this means I get to cross off half of #30 on my 100 in 1001 list! But now comes the time-consuming project of transferring all of my files on to this new computer.

I haven’t talked about my intuitive eating for a bit, so let’s discuss. By being more in tune to my hunger and what my body needs, I’ve consciously thought about everything I’ve eaten in the last week. When I was simply eating and tracking calories, I was eating just to eat but not really listening to what my body wanted. I think it’s gone really well. I have found I’m hungrier a lot more than I thought I was, and I’m hoping this means my metabolism is moving faster. I’m so hangry all.the.time, I’m starting to annoy myself.

Tomorrow is “measurement day”. Every 30 days, I take my measurements, and I will try to post them on here. I think it’s been a while since I’ve actually done that.

On another note, I’m going to start making a conscious effort to be less negative. I’ve become a complainer, and I tend to see the bad things in people. But I’m going to try my hardest from here on out to be a more positive, happy person :)

I’ve come to the conclusion, my taper time has made my blog rather boring, so here’s 25 random facts about me… enjoy!

1. I have natural curly, black hair. As you can tell from my picture, I don’t like my curly, black hair.
2. I was a Disney World cast member for 3 years, on and off. The magic is pretty much almost gone.
3. I’ve never had a cavity, and I’ve never had to wear braces.
4. I won first place in the Coast Day essay contest for my ideas regarding preventing beach erosion in the 5th grade. Glad to see they finally implemented my ideas 15 years later.
5. I’ve only had 2 pets in my life- 2 cats, Biscuit and Ezra
6. I’m anal retentive about one thing- reconciling my check book to the penny.
7. I’m on a mission to read 50 books this year. I’m on book #1… Haha.. But I read several books at one time, so I don’t finish them very quickly
8. I love lamp.
9. I ran my first 5K since high school in May 2008 and placed second in my age group.
10. I refuse to watch TV when the show is actually on. I only watch things on my DVR so I can fast forward through the commercials.
11. I hate the radio. I listen for music not the talking.
12. I’ve broken 2 bones- my wrist when I was 8 while rollerskating at church and my middle toe when I was a senior in high school while dancing in the kitchen.
13. I would give my left arm to go back to high school, and my right to go back to college for just one day. It’s a good thing I can’t, because then I wouldn’t have any arms.
14. I wish I would have joined a sorority in college.
15. Growing up I hated potatoes. Now, they’re my favorite food.
16. I’ve seen every episode of Sex and the City and Grey’s Anatomy.
17. I can’t stand pro football. I’ll only watch it with you if you’re hot and want to cuddle.
18. I don’t have any tattoos, but I’ll get one when I run my first marathon.
19. I’ve been in one major car accident.
20. My secret single behavior (like they talked about on Sex and the City)- I sometimes treat myself to a candlelit dinner all by myself.
21. I’m Agnostic.
22. I’ve lived in 4 states (Maryland, Delaware, Florida, and Pennsylvania), and I don’t think I’ve ever truly felt “at home” anywhere.
23. I could watch “The Day After Tomorrow” and “Shawshank Redemption” until the end of time.
24. I’d rather listen to live music in a brew pub and sip good beer than bar hop and get wasted.
25. I wish I would have gotten a degree in something else besides Hotel & Restaurant Management. Maybe medicine instead.

Now you know a little bit about me :)

Time to go to bed and de-stress. I was supposed to do dishes tonight, but I can’t bring myself to do anything!

3 days until I leave for Disney World!

Selling my “too big for me” clothes

25 Feb

I’ve been meaning to do this for a few months, but I finally put some clothes on eBay that no longer fit me. So, if you’re a size 12 or 14 and interested in bidding on my dress pants (all from The Limited), check out my listings please :) They’re all very gently worn and in excellent condition. I feel good getting them out of the house, like I know now that I can’t go back to them.

I ended up eating a lot more calories today than I normally do, but hey, I ate when I was hungry. Dinner ended up being polenta with refried vegetarian beans, guac, and plain Greek yogurt. It was the first time I tried that all together, and it was really good! I really want to try this recipe for Mexican Polenta Pie (vegetarian version). Calories consumed today was a little over 2000… burned zero. Drank 66 ounces of water (my goal).

I left my mom a little note today while she was out picking up lunch…

In case you’re wondering why I’m leaving all of these Operation Beautiful notes around, I made it one of my 101 in 1001 goals to leave 50 of them around for people to find :)

My Athleta order came in yesterday. However, the tank is too tight, so I’ll need to work on losing my “muffin” before I wear it. Booo. But that works out because my new running skirt didn’t match it anyway. Not that I care about matching for a race, but you know what I mean. But I think the hat is a keeper!

Ok, I need to go to bed so I’ll be well-rested for tomorrow!

8 days until I leave for Disney World!

101 in 1001

6 Feb

With a weekend stuck at home, I knew I had to delve into a project, and the work I brought home with me was not an option. So, I made a 101 in 1001 list like I’ve seen on so many blogs. One of the things on my list is Project 365, so you’ll be seeing a daily post with pictures from me. Exciting, huh. The Project 365 only allows for one photo a day, but I’ll probably post more.

I slept until about 9:30 this morning and only woke up because of a text from one of my many suitors ;) He’s much younger than me, but I’m enjoying the overflowing compliments I’m receiving from him. It’s nice to be called “gorgeous” in the morning.

I started off my morning with a bowl of Puffins and skim milk and settled myself on the couch to watch Disney Dream Weddings.  I tried to watch Lost, but I became disinterested in that and more interested in blogs and my 101 list. Do you ever get sucked into blog land by reading someone’s blog, clicking on their friends’ blogs, and ending up joining new sites and subscribing to about 171 new blogs. I’m obviously addicted.

For lunch, I had half of a Kashi pizza, and I had the rest of it for dinner. I’m still starving, but I’m afraid to eat more food for fear that I’ll eat it all and not be able to leave my house to get more food in this snowstorm. Speaking of the snow, they’ve already cancelled school on Monday. I snacked on a PB&J Larabar around 5… that flavor is my favorite! I tried the Cherry Pie yesterday at work, and it was just too bitter for my tastes.

Now, I’m watching Julie and Julia. I’ve tried to get through it for the past four nights. It’s not that it’s boring, but I just can’t stand Meryl Streep in this movie. This movie gets a C in my book.

I really only like the parts of the movie with Amy Adams. I looked up the Julie/Julia Project blog, and I was kinda surprised that she no longer blogs.

I didn’t get a whole lot of housecleaning done today, but I did fill up my entire recycling bin, so that  helped clear out my pantry (where I keep my recyclables).

Project 365 Pictures of the Day….

Snow Storm Oh Ten brought us about 2 feet of snow...

A day with no make-up

I spent most of the day on the couch reading blogs

Now I’m going to watch some Big Love and see what else I can eat! I’m hungry!!!
